The Regional Municipality of York and the Government of Canada announced Affordable Housing, and financing to finance the building of 141 homes in the York Region.
The projects are receiving over $26.4 million in funding from the federal government via the National Housing Co-Investment Fund (NHCF) and the third round of the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI), with over $16 million coming from the Regional Municipality of York Region.
Furthermore, through the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative (OPHI), a programme of the Canada-Ontario Bilateral Agreement under the National Housing Strategy, and the Investment in Affordable Housing Extension (IAH-E), the federal and provincial governments have already invested over $11 million.
The Whitchurch-Stouffville Community Housing Development project, which York Region is constructing at 5676 Main Street, was the site of the announcement. The project will provide one, two, and three-bedroom units that are intended to serve Canadians from a variety of economic backgrounds, including women and their children, families, seniors, and single people. The project aims to close a sizable gap in the community for rental properties and is anticipated to be finished by summer 2024. The second project, Inn from the Cold Transitional Housing, is a three-story facility with 44 beds for emergency and transitional housing that serves the most vulnerable members of the community. It is situated at 17046 Yonge Street in Newmarket. Together with shared programming and resident amenity space, the project would also contain administrative spaces for full-time support services.
Federal financing for this project includes $150,000 in SEED funds and $7.4 million from the third round of the Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI3). By autumn of 2024, the project’s construction is anticipated to be finished.
