The History of Snake Island Georgina Ontario

Situated in the Thousand Islands region of Ontario, the uniquely named Snake Island Georgina Ontario carries a storied history that takes us back centuries. But why the name ‘Snake Island’? Was it because of an abundance of snakes in the past, you may ask? Not at all! The island was named so due to its intriguing serpentine shoreline that snakes around in the water.

The ancestors of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation were inhabitants of the Lake Simcoe region long before the arrival of white settlers. Chippewa Chief, Joseph Snake, and his people first lived on Snake Island, one of three islands (Snake, Fox and Georgina) not surrendered to the Crown.


In 1830, Snake and two other Chippewa communities (led by Chief Assance and Chief Yellowhead) were moved to 9,800 acres near what is now Coldwater, Ontario as part of the government’s Coldwater Experiment to colonize the Chippewa people. Then, just six years later, the Chiefs were forced to surrender these lands under treaty. Chief Joseph Snake slowly moved his people back to Snake Island. By 1860, the band had outgrown small Snake Island and Chief Snake moved his people onto the larger and more spacious Georgina Island.

All the leases on the island right now, there are 240+ cottages on the island right now,  and there leases are all up for renewal for 2041, the average price for a back lot cottage right now is about 150-250.

and the average price for a direct water front cottage 250-400 right now, and if you have back lot cottage you have a dedicate water access it might be right in front of the cottage or you may have to go a bit down to get water front access, you’ll be given your own waterfront access to those cottages, where you can put your dock and your boat and everything.

A dock with 8 boats parked at it that is public docking called Sheppard’s wharf it is leased by SICA snake island cottagers association here is a little blurb – Islanders have often referred to the Sheppard’s Dock Wharf  as “The Government Dock”.  It is owned by the Township of Georgina and located on Lake Drive North (between Island Grove and East Point Marinas) at the end of Sheppard Ave.

The Wharf is leased by the Snake Island Cottagers’ Association from the Town of Georgina.

Please note, Sheppard’s Dock Wharf is a public dock and therefore we will not entertain complaints about it!
